Flashcards

MDF

Medium-density fiberboard, made by gluing and compressing sawdust.

Plywood

A strong, stable board made by gluing thin wood sheets together with different grain directions for maximum strength.

Blockboard

A strong, heavy board made of timber strips with veneers.

Chipboard

A board made by mixing wood chips and binding agents. Its strength depends on the density of the chips.

Study Notes

Wood Types

  • Softwoods are straight-grained, but knotty, and quite strong, and easy to work. White/brown in colour.
  • Hardwoods are light brown, pinkish brown, hard, tough, heavy and durable. Gets harder with age.
  • Cedar is straight-grained and knot- free. Very light and durable. Quite soft.
  • Spruce is quite strong with few knots. Resistant to splitting, but not durable.
  • Red pine is straight-grained, but knotty, quite strong and easy to work. Red/orange in colour.
  • Oak is light brown, pinkish brown, hard, tough, heavy and durable. Gets harder with age.
  • Beech is mid-brown colour, hard, strong, tough, tends to warp but bends well. Can be steam-bent.
  • Ash is light in colour, flexible, tough, bends well and varnishes well.
  • Mahogany is red/brown colour, medium in colour and age.
  • Teak is straight or wavy-grained. Coarse uneven texture with oily feel. Golden to darker brown. Very expensive.

Manufactured Boards

  • Plywood is very strong, stable and easy to machine/work.
  • MDF (medium-density fibreboard) is high strength, easily machined, shaped, and paints well.
  • Chipboard is very strong, heavy, rigid and good load-bearing capabilities. Density of wood is dependent on chip size. Almost like hardboard. Very weak and brittle.
  • Blockboard is very strong, heavy, and strength is dependent on chip particle size.
  • Hardboard is made from gluing and compressing wood fibre.
