Study Notes
Wood and Wood Composites
- Wood composites are produced in large sheets, usually 1220mm (4’) x 2440mm (8’).
- Plywood is the most common wood composite, made of several thin plies or veneers of wood glued together.
- The outside plies are called the face and the back, and the center plies are called the core.
- The cross-layering of plywood makes it very stable and strong.
Seasoning and Preservation
- Seasoning is a process that helps to preserve wood.
- Coatings or layers of protective material over the surface are good for interior purposes only.
- The methods of applying preservatives include:
- Pressure treatment, where wood is placed in cylinders and preservative is pumped under pressure.
- Hot and Cold Bath Method, where wood is first placed in a bath of hot preservative and then in a bath of cold preservative.
- Dipping or immersing the wood in a hot preservative for a short time.
- Brushing.
Types of Wood and Wood Composites
- Lumber can be classified into different types, including quarter sawn lumber.
- Quarter sawn lumber has more even grain patterns, wears more evenly with less raised grain and warping, shrinks and swells less in width, and more in thickness.
- Wood composites include:
- Plywood
- Hardboard
- Chipboard
- Fiberboard
- Gypsum Board
- Fibercement Board
- Particle Board
Properties of Wood
- Wood shrinks tangentially to the wood grain, usually twice as much as radial shrinkage.
- Vertical grain lumber shrinks uniformly while plain sawn cuts near a log’s perimeter will cup away from the center.
- The thermal expansion of wood is generally much less than volume changes due to changes in humidity.
Millwork and Plastics
- Millwork includes mouldings.
- Plastics in architecture can be classified into:
- Thermoplastics
- Thermosetting Plastics
- Plastics can be used to make sheets, film, and foam.
