Study Notes
IT Infrastructure & Network Technologies
- It is a combination of hardware, software, networks, security, data centers, and telecommunications.
- Provides core technology components for organizational IT functions.
Hardware
- Includes servers, desktops, laptops, and other computing devices.
- Also encompasses storage systems, networking equipment (switches, routers, firewalls), peripherals.
Software
- Consists of operating systems, middleware, databases, and application software.
Networking
- Covers Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs), wireless networks, and internet connectivity.
- Includes communication protocols.
Evolution of IT Infrastructure
- Tabulating Machine: An electromechanical machine (invented by Herman Hollerith) to summarize information from punched cards, initially for the 1890 U.S. Census.
- Mainframe Computers: IBM 1401 and 7090 transistorized machines in 1959 marked the start of widespread use, powerful enough to support thousands of online terminals.
- Personal Computers (PCs): The proliferation of PCs in the 1980s and 1990s led to more productivity software tools and small data management programs that became essential for home and corporate users. These operated as standalone systems until the 1990s when operating system software enabled network linking.
- Client-Server Computing: Desktop or laptop computers (clients) are networked with powerful server computers which provide services and capabilities. Processing tasks split between the two types of machines. The client is the entry point for the user.
- Enterprise Computing: Businesses integrated different networks and applications using networking standards. Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) became a standard.
- Cloud and Mobile Computing: Increasing internet bandwidth pushed the client/server model further, leading to cloud computing models which offer shared access to computing resources (including computers, storage, applications, services) over a network. Wireless network technology advancements and growth of mobile devices.
