Welding Inspection Technology Overview

• The course "Welding Inspection Technology" consists of 10 chapters covering various aspects of welding inspection and certification.
• The welding inspector's role is vital in ensuring the quality of welded products and involves more than just inspecting finished welds.
• The course is designed to provide both experienced and novice welding inspectors with the necessary information for the successful completion of the American Welding Society’s Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) examination.
• The welding inspector must have a wide range of knowledge and skills, as the job involves more than simply looking at welds.
• Effective welding inspection involves checking drawings and specifications, overseeing various processing steps, and ensuring compliance with quality requirements.
• The welding inspector must be familiar with many facets of the fabrication process, as a successful quality control program begins well before the first arc is struck.
• The course covers topics such as safe practices for welding inspectors, metal joining and cutting processes, weld joint geometry and welding symbols, documents governing welding inspection and qualification, metal properties and destructive testing, metric practice for welding inspection, welding metallurgy for the welding inspector, weld and base metal discontinuities, and visual inspection and other NDE methods and symbols.
• The role of overseer and specialist inspectors is explained, with the overseer overseeing the duties of several inspectors and the specialist focusing on specific tasks in the inspection process.
• The course includes selected technical references such as AWS codes, certification manuals, metric practice guides, and standard welding terms and definitions.
• Inspectors may serve as both overseer and specialist, and fabricators may employ several overseer type inspectors, each having their own area of general weld inspection responsibility.
• The welding inspector's job is an ongoing process, with various responsibilities outlined in Section 4 of AWS QC1, Standard for AWS Certification of Welding Inspectors.
