Study Notes
Weekly Notices to Mariners
- Issued weekly by the Admiralty, containing corrections to charts and other publications
- Include corrections to Admiralty sailing directions, Admiralty list of lights and radio signals, and temporary and preliminary notices to correct charts
- Numbering increases chronologically throughout the year, starting with notice no.1 in the first week of January
- Notify about new charts or new editions being published and their previous editions being cancelled
- Corrections are mentioned in the form of coordinates with instructions or overlay chart tracings and blocks to be cut and pasted
Cumulative List of Notices to Mariners
- Published twice a year in January and July
- Provide a list of current editions of all Admiralty Charts and the serial numbers of notices affecting them issued in the previous two years
- Used to verify charts onboard for any missing corrections
Annual Summary of Notices to Mariners
- Publishes all temporary and preliminary notices for a previous year
- Used to verify chart availability and update charts if necessary
Updating Charts
- Update charts by writing the latest notices to mariners number after the text "ADMIRALTY notices to mariners updated to"
- Verify that the date is not older than the one on the chart availability list
Tracing Paper
- Top section of a tracing paper includes:
- Chart reference (or number)
- Edition date of the chart
- Position of the correction on the chart
- Current notices to mariners number
- Previous notices to mariners number
- Use S type arrows to indicate corrections on ADMIRALTY charts

- Grouped in Folios, which represent an area on the map
- Example: Folio 25 is part of the Mediterranean buoys
