Study Notes
Web vs. Internet
- The web (World Wide Web) is an interconnected network of web pages accessed using links.
- The Internet is a vast connection of networks linking millions of computers globally, enabling communication between them.
First Website
- The first website went live on August 6, 1991, with the address http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html.
- It contained links to the WWW project, a description of hypertext, information about creating web servers, and links to other web servers.
History of the Web
- Tim Berners-Lee invented the Web (WWW) in 1989 while at CERN.
- His idea was to combine computers, data networks, and hypertext into a powerful and simple global information system.
- He wrote his first proposal in March 1989 and the second in May 1990.
- The WWW software was available to colleagues at CERN in March 1991.
- By August 1991, the project was announced on Internet newsgroups, leading to global interest.
- By the end of 1990, the first web server and browser were running at CERN using a NeXT computer.
- To prevent the server from being accidentally shut down, Berners-Lee put up a label in red ink stating "This machine is a server. DO NOT POWER IT DOWN!!"
- Berners-Lee had to recruit more developers to support the growing demand.
- In 1993, NCSA released versions of the web browser for PC and Macintosh, which significantly increased the popularity of the World Wide Web.
The Internet - Physical connections
- The Internet relies on physical cables such as copper telephone wires, TV cables, and fiber optic cables.
- Wireless connections, like Wi-Fi and 3G/4G, are also networks because they depend on these physical cables for access.
The 1990s: Internet Development
- ARPANET was decommissioned in the 1990s.
- Berners-Lee and his colleagues at CERN developed HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and the URL (Uniform Resource Locator), which formed the first version of the World Wide Web.
- In 1995, Microsoft launched Windows 95.
- Online businesses like Amazon, Yahoo, and eBay emerged.
- Java was created, enabling animations on websites and fueling new internet activity.
