Internet Basics
- A home page is the starting point or doorway to a website, referring to the web page that identifies a website and contains hyperlinks to other web pages in the website.
- A website is a set of related web pages (linked through hypertext links), published by an organization or an individual.
World Wide Web (WWW)
- WWW is a collection of linked documents or pages stored on millions of computers and distributed across the world.
- It provides information in multimedia form, including text, graphics, video, and audio.
Web Page
- A web page is a hypertext document on the World Wide Web, written in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).
- Web pages are also known as HTML documents and may contain hyperlinks to jump from one web page to another.
Browser
- A browser is special software that enables users to read/view web pages and jump from one web page to another.
- There are two types of browsers:
- Graphical browsers (e.g., Internet Explorer, Google Chrome) that allow retrieval of text, images, and video.
- Text Browsers (e.g., Lynx) that provide access to the web in text-only mode.
Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
- A URL is a unique address that identifies a web page's location on the Internet.
- The format of a URL consists of four parts:
- Protocol (usually http or https)
- Name of the web server (domain name)
- Path (hierarchic location of the file on the computer)
- File name
Internet Service Provider (ISP) and Web Server
- An ISP is an organization that connects its subscriber's computer to the Internet using a modem.
- A web server is a computer equipped with server software, providing a specific kind of service to client software running on other computers.
- Examples of ISPs include America Online (AOL) and Yahoo.
