Study Notes
Weather Observations
- Weather observations are data gathered from surface and upper-altitude observations.
- They form the basis for weather forecasts, advisories, and briefings.
- Observations can come in three types: Surface observations, Upper Air observations, and Radar observations.
Surface Aviation Weather Observations
- These observations compile weather elements at ground stations across a nation.
- Surface observations provide data about the current weather conditions.
Automated Weather Observing System
- This system comprises various sensors, a processor, and a computer-generated voice subsystem.
- It has a transmitter, broadcasting weather data.
- Information can come from a person or from automated stations.
Ceilometer (Clouds)
- Measures cloud height, thickness, and vertical visibility up to 40,000 feet.
Visibility & Present Weather Sensor
- Measures atmospheric transparency from 10 meters to 50 kilometers.
- Measures light attenuation and scattering, unaffected by temperature.
- Optically measures precipitation occurrences, type, and rate.
- Detects drizzle, rain, snow, freezing rain, and freezing drizzle.
Lightning Detection Sensor (Lightning)
- Accurately detects and measures lightning strikes, including direction.
- Detects electrical and magnetic fields generated during intra-cloud, inter-cloud, and cloud-to-ground electrical discharges within a 200 nautical mile radius.
Rain Gauge (Rain)
- Measures rain and snowfall volume and/or amount.
Wind Speed and Direction Sensor (Wind)
- Uses an anemometer to measure wind speed.
- A type of anemometer, the ultrasonic anemometer, is used for extreme weather conditions.
Runway Visual Range Sensors/Transisometer
- Measures the visual range from the runway.
Automated Surface Observing Systems
- Provide surface observations every minute via digitized voice broadcasts and printed reports.
Upper Air Observations
- Includes radiosonde observations and pilot weather reports (PIREPs).
Radiosonde Observations
- A weather instrument observing and reporting meteorological conditions in the upper atmosphere.
- Typically carried into the atmosphere by a weather balloon.
Pilot Weather Reports (PIREPs)
- Provides temperature, humidity, pressure, and wind data up to 100,000 feet.
- The only real-time source of information on turbulence, icing, and cloud heights, gathered from pilots during flight.
Radar Observations
- Provides information about precipitation, wind, and weather systems.
Radar Sources
- WSR-88D NEXRAD Radar/Doppler Radar
- FAA Terminal Doppler Weather Radar
- Terminal Radar
- FAA Airport Surveillance Radar
WSR-88D NEXRAD Radar/Doppler Radar
- Provides in-depth observations to inform surrounding communities about impending weather.
FAA Terminal Doppler Weather Radar
- Installed at major airports to provide severe weather alerts.
- Ensures pilots are aware of wind shear, gust fronts, and heavy precipitation.
FAA Airport Surveillance Radar
- Primarily detects aircraft.
- Detects location and intensity of precipitation to direct aircraft traffic around bad weather conditions.
