Study Notes
Properties of Light
- Light is a peculiar thing that can travel in straight lines, bend, reflect, and even pass through objects, causing harm or death in rare circumstances.
- Light is electromagnetic radiation that propagates through the electromagnetic field and the vacuum of space at approximately 300,000 kilometers per second.
- Light can be thought of as waves that propagate through space, but it can also be regarded as being made up of photons, which are the smallest units of light that oscillate through empty space.
The Electromagnetic Spectrum
- The electromagnetic spectrum consists of all the different wavelengths and frequencies of electromagnetic waves, radiation, or light.
- The spectrum includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-ray, and gamma rays, listed from longest wavelength to shortest.
- Electromagnetic radiation with the most energy has the highest frequency and the shortest wavelengths.
Visible Light
- Visible light is just one kind of light amongst the electromagnetic spectrum, with wavelengths between 700 and 400 nanometers.
- The human eye detects and perceives the various wavelengths and frequencies of visible light as different colors.
- Each substance absorbs, reflects, and/or emits different wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, and the eye and brain detect and differentiate these wavelengths, perceiving the world around us as colored.
The Study of Light
- Many scientists and thinkers have contributed to studying light and its spectrum throughout history, including Ancient Greek philosophers, Indian Buddhist philosophers, and modern scientists such as Isaac Newton, Robert Hooke, and Albert Einstein.
Wave-Like Properties of Light
- Light behaves like waves on a pond, demonstrating interference patterns when projected on a surface.
- The double slit experiment demonstrates the wave-like properties of light, where light passes through two parallel slits and creates an interference pattern on a surface.
Particle-Like Properties of Light
- Light's particle behavior is observed in the photoelectric effect, where light interacts with and impacts matter, causing electrons to increase their energy levels.
- Einstein proposed that light can be quantized, and the quanta of light are named photons.
- Photons carry energy directly proportional to their frequency and inversely proportional to their wavelength.
Uses of Light
- Light, of all wavelengths and frequencies, has many uses, including photosynthesis, navigation, and technology.
- Humans have developed technology that can utilize and detect light outside the visible spectrum, including radio waves, microwaves, infrared, ultraviolet, x-rays, and gamma rays.
Key Concepts of Light
- Light is electromagnetic radiation that is organized in the electromagnetic spectrum.
- Visible light or white light can be broken up into different wavelengths and frequencies, which are perceived to the human eye and brain as colors.
- Light travels at approximately 300,000 kilometers a second in empty space, but slows down when passing through denser mediums.
- Light behaves like both a wave and a particle.
