Study Notes

Poster Colours

  • More pigmented than water colours and tempera colours, eliminating the need for glue size addition before use
  • Can be mixed with water and applied with a brush to create a desired consistency
  • Must be mixed to a medium consistency before use to avoid brush marks
  • Suitable for indoor works and Graphic communication design projects

Acrylic Colours

  • Opaque water-based paints containing synthetic resin(s) as binder, fine coloured pigment, and drier
  • Fast-drying with good opacity, elasticity, flow, adhesion, and water resistance
  • Available in small and big containers, and in paste form in tubes
  • Drying rate can be retarded by adding a little linseed oil, often used for large realistic mural paintings
  • Suitable for all kinds of paintings and Graphic communication design works
  • Can be used to prime fabric, wood, and cement walls
  • Can be sprayed with vanish or lacquer upon drying to improve brightness and durability

Techniques for Rendering Flat Paintings

  • Silhouette technique: painting the object or scene in one flat colour
  • Outline silhouette: painting the outlines of the object with one flat colour
  • Block or two-dimensional silhouette: painting the entire shape of the object with one flat colour
  • Three-dimensional silhouette: creating the illusion of solidity or three-dimensionality in the object by adding light and dark tones

Learn about the characteristics and application techniques of acrylic paints compared to watercolor paints. Understand the benefits of adding glue size for adhesion and permanence, and how to mix the colors to achieve the desired consistency.
