Standard Operating Procedure for Water Audit Report and Evaluation Criteria
- The Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) is responsible for regulating and controlling groundwater development and management in India
- Guidelines were issued by the Ministry of Jal Shakti to control and regulate groundwater extraction
- Industries extracting over 100 cubic meters per day of groundwater must conduct an annual water audit
- Audits are to be conducted by certified auditors (e.g., CII, FICCI, NPC)
- Audit reports must be submitted to CGWA within three months of completion
- Industries must reduce groundwater use by at least 20% within three years
- The amendment to the previous regulations changed the audit frequency to biennial (every two years)
- Rajiv Gandhi National Ground Water and Training Institute (RGNGWTRI), Naya Raipur, Chhattisgarh, and National Water Academy (NWA), Pune, Maharashtra, offer training
- All industries abstracting groundwater in excess of 100 cubic meters per day must conduct biennial water audits
