Study Notes

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Guidelines

  • Purpose: Ensure proper personnel protection and public recognition of qualified assistance during emergencies. Not intended to supersede existing PPE requirements.
  • Disciplinary Action: Members may face disciplinary action for not wearing appropriate PPE or proper outerwear. Personal responsibility for appropriate PPE based on risk assessment for tasks.
  • PPE Availability: Members are encouraged to have PPE/Personal Flotation Device (PFD) outerwear available at all times. However, there may be non-standard situations where full PPE/PFD isn't immediately available.
  • Fire Dispatched Incidents:
    • Full Protective Clothing: Wear full protective clothing, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), for vehicle, structure, or dumpster fires.
    • Seatbelts: All personnel (except the driver) are required to remain seat-belted at all times while the vehicle is in motion.
    • Driver Exemption/Obligation: The driver is exempt from wearing full PPE during the response; however, the driver is encouraged to wear pants, suspenders, and boots. Drivers must wear a helmet, pants, and boots as soon as possible after arrival at the incident location.
  • Other Dispatched Incidents:
    • Required Attire: All personnel must be appropriately attired, ensuring PVFD outerwear is worn. If PVFD outerwear is unavailable, minimum attire is pants, suspenders, and boots.

PPE Storage and Cleaning

  • Purpose: Establish guidelines for storing and maintaining protective equipment.
  • Scope: Covers storage and post-incident cleaning of all protective clothing.
  • Storage:
    • Neat and Orderly: All gear must be stored neatly and organized for immediate use during emergencies.
    • Apparatuses: Station personnel who respond on apparatus can hang gear at station. Boots, bunker pants, and helmets have dedicated storage areas. All storage areas are to be kept organized.
    • Gear Bags: Members responding directly to calls should store gear in gear bags.
    • Environmental Concerns: Dry gear completely before storing to prevent mildew, mold, or dry rot. Avoid direct sunlight exposure. Do not store gear where it will be exposed to UV damage or in vehicles with tinted windows.
  • Cleaning and Laundry:
    • Contaminant Removal: All protective clothing must be cleaned and dried after use to remove contaminants.
    • Cleaning Materials: Use PVFD provided protective clothing detergent or any other non-phosphorous commercial detergent. Bleach is not to be used.
    • Inspection and Repair: Any rips, burn holes, or damage to protective clothing must be immediately reported and repaired by the department quartermaster.
  • Protective Gear Specific Instructions: Detailed instructions are provided for cleaning hoods, gloves, coats, pants outer shells, and coat/pant inner liners, including specific washing cycles (29-minute, permanent press), and using either hot or warm water (warm/warm for Station 2 and 3). Inner liners should be turned inside out before washing. For hoods and gloves, machine drying on low heat is recommended.
  • Laundry Equipment Care: Maintain all laundry equipment, keep areas clean, and clean lint screens. Keep exterior areas clean of dirt and spilled detergent. ALWAYS CLEAN LINT SCREEN.
