Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Gujarat, India.
He trained as a lawyer and began practicing in India in 1891 but was unsuccessful.
He moved to South Africa in 1893 and began representing an Indian merchant in a lawsuit.
He went on to live in South Africa for 21 years.
In 1915, he returned to India and soon became involved in the Indian National Congress, leading campaigns for civil rights and self-rule.
In 1921, he assumed leadership of the Indian National Congress and led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding womens rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, and achieving swaraj or self-rule.
In 1930, he led the successful campaign for the repeal of the salt tax with the 400 km (250 mi) Dandi Salt March.
In 1942, he called for the British to leave India in a speech known as the "Quit India" speech.
He was imprisoned many times and for many years in both South Africa and India.
He died on January 30, 1948, at the age of 80.
