  • Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Gujarat, India.
  • He trained as a lawyer and began practicing in India in 1891 but was unsuccessful.
  • He moved to South Africa in 1893 and began representing an Indian merchant in a lawsuit.
  • He went on to live in South Africa for 21 years.
  • In 1915, he returned to India and soon became involved in the Indian National Congress, leading campaigns for civil rights and self-rule.
  • In 1921, he assumed leadership of the Indian National Congress and led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding womens rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, and achieving swaraj or self-rule.
  • In 1930, he led the successful campaign for the repeal of the salt tax with the 400 km (250 mi) Dandi Salt March.
  • In 1942, he called for the British to leave India in a speech known as the "Quit India" speech.
  • He was imprisoned many times and for many years in both South Africa and India.
  • He died on January 30, 1948, at the age of 80.
