History of Volleyball
- Volleyball was invented by American William G. Morgan in 1895 at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
- The game was initially called “Mintonette” and was later renamed volleyball due to the nature of the game, which involves volleying the ball back and forth.
- The first court consisted of a tennis net raised 6.5 feet from the floor, with a playing area divided into two equal parts by piles of books.
Development of Volleyball
- The first set of volleyball rules for men was formulated in 1916.
- The YMCA held its first National Volleyball Championship in 1922.
- In 1924, the division for girls and women’s sports of the American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation published the rules for girls’ volleyball.
- Volleyball became popular during World War II and was officially introduced as an Olympic sport in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
Court and Net Dimensions
- A volleyball court should be rectangular and symmetrical, measuring 18 meters long and 9 meters wide.
- The free zone surrounding the court should be at least 3 meters wide on all sides.
- The free playing space above the court should be at least 7 meters in height and free from obstructions.
- The lines on the court should be 5 centimeters wide and have a color that makes them visible and distinct.
- The boundaries of the playing court are marked by two side lines and two end lines.
- Attack lines are parallel lines 3 meters from both sides of the center line.

Net Dimensions

- The antenna is 1.50 meters long and 10 mm in diameter.
The Ball
- The ball should be spherical in shape and made of flexible leather or synthetic leather (case) and rubber (bladder).
- The circumference of the ball should be 65-67 cm, and its weight should be 260-280 g.
