Vocabulary Skills

• At the end of the lesson, students should be able to use prior knowledge of familiar words, word association, and select words using cohesive devices and contextual clues.

  • An engineer designs, builds, or maintains engines, machines, or structures.
• The blind lady had been deceived by the dishonest stallholder, who sold rotten tomatoes and pretended to give a discount
  • Deceived means cheated or lied to.
• Su Ying is the most selfless person in the class, thinking of others before herself.
• Mrs. Leong trudged up the hill with heavy bags, being extremely tired.
  • Trudged means walking with heavy footsteps.
• The birthday party for the mother was meant to be a secret, but the neighbour let the cat out of the bag, which disappointed sisters.
  • Let the cat out of the bag means to reveal something that was meant to be a secret.
• The old man peered out from his window when the doorbell rang.
  • Peered means to look with difficulty or concentration at someone or something.
• Mary is bold, but her sister, Anne is timid.
  • Bold means being willing to take risks, confident and courageous.
  • Timid means lacking in courage or confidence.
• The smell of durians is overpowering, which is why not many foreigners like it.
  • Overpowering means extremely strong or intense; overwhelming.
• The murderer knew that he was not going to be let off so easily.
  • Let off means a chance to escape or avoid something, especially defeat.
• Deying replied to the stranger warily when he suddenly asked her where she lived, knowing she had to be careful.
  • Warily means cautiously or carefully.
