Study Notes
Bloom's Taxonomy
- Developed by Benjamin Bloom with collaborators in 1956
- A framework for categorizing educational goals
- Widely used by K-12 and college instructors
- Consists of six major categories: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation
- Categories after Knowledge are presented as skills and abilities, with knowledge as the prerequisite
- Subcategories are continuum from simple to complex, and concrete to abstract
- Popularly remembered by the six main categories
Types of Learning Targets
- Focus on factual, procedural, and conceptual understandings
- Math Example: Recognizes acute, obtuse, and right angles
- ELA Example: Identifies nouns and verbs
- Science Example: Describes how organisms interact with each other to transfer energy and matter in an ecosystem
Reasoning Targets
- Specify thought processes students apply effectively
- Includes solving problems, making inferences, drawing conclusions, and defending judgments
- Students apply knowledge in authentic contexts
- Six overall patterns of reasoning: inference, analysis, comparison, classification, evaluation, and synthesis
- Examples presented from Math, ELA, Social Studies, and Science
Skill Targets
- Learning targets where a real-time demonstration or physical performance is central
- Subjects like physical education, fine arts, performing arts, and world languages
- Examples given for Math, ELA, Social Studies, Science, Health/PE, and The Arts
Product Targets
- Product targets focus on the qualities of a good product
- Examples include tables, graphs, scatter plots, box plots
- Fewer product targets than knowledge and reasoning targets
- Considered lab reports, term papers, and research reports
Disposition Targets
- Reflect attitudes and feelings
- Important affective goals for students
- Educational experiences but not assessed for grading purposes
- Examples for ELA, Math, Social Studies, Science, Health/PE, and The Arts
