Study Notes
Visual Pathway
- The visual pathway includes retinoid axons from the eyes to the occipital visual cortex
- The optic nerve moves to the optic chiasm, where some decussation is noted
- 90% of fibers synapse in the thalamic component (lateral geniculate bodies)
- 10% of fibers synapse in the midbrain
- Axons from the LGB then project to the occipital lobe as the upper and lower fiber bundles
Field of Vision
- The field of vision is the visual area seen by an eye at a given instant
- It is the area of the external environment that can be seen by one eye (monocular)
- The area seen to the nasal side is called the nasal field of vision
- The area seen to the lateral side is called the temporal field of vision
- Information from the right side of the visual field has the image falling on the left visual cortex
- Information from the left side of the visual field has the image falling on the right visual cortex
Test your knowledge of the visual pathway and neuropathways with this quiz. Explore the journey of retinoid axons from the eyes to the occipital visual cortex, the decussation at the optic chiasm, and the synapses in the lateral geniculate bodies and midbrain.
