Study Notes
Definition and Measurement
- Visual acuity is the ability to see objects clearly and in detail
- Measured by the smallest detail that can be seen at a certain distance (usually 20 feet or 6 meters)
- Expressed as a fraction (e.g. 20/20 or 6/6) where the top number is the testing distance and the bottom number is the distance at which a normal eye can see the same detail
Normal Visual Acuity
- Normal visual acuity is considered 20/20 or 6/6
- This means an individual with normal vision can see objects clearly at 20 feet that a normal eye can also see at 20 feet
Abnormal Visual Acuity
- Visual acuity less than 20/20 indicates nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism
- Visual acuity greater than 20/20 indicates exceptional visual acuity
Factors Affecting Visual Acuity
- Refractive errors: nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia
- Eye diseases: cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy
- Neurological disorders: amblyopia, brain damage
- Environmental factors: lighting, contrast, and visual noise
Clinical Significance
- Visual acuity is an important indicator of overall eye health and visual function
- Used to diagnose and monitor eye diseases and disorders
- Important for occupations requiring good vision, such as pilots, drivers, and surgeons
