    Study Notes

    Definition and Measurement

    • Visual acuity is the ability to see objects clearly and in detail
    • Measured by the smallest detail that can be seen at a certain distance (usually 20 feet or 6 meters)
    • Expressed as a fraction (e.g. 20/20 or 6/6) where the top number is the testing distance and the bottom number is the distance at which a normal eye can see the same detail

    Normal Visual Acuity

    • Normal visual acuity is considered 20/20 or 6/6
    • This means an individual with normal vision can see objects clearly at 20 feet that a normal eye can also see at 20 feet

    Abnormal Visual Acuity

    • Visual acuity less than 20/20 indicates nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism
    • Visual acuity greater than 20/20 indicates exceptional visual acuity

    Factors Affecting Visual Acuity

    • Refractive errors: nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia
    • Eye diseases: cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy
    • Neurological disorders: amblyopia, brain damage
    • Environmental factors: lighting, contrast, and visual noise

    Clinical Significance

    • Visual acuity is an important indicator of overall eye health and visual function
    • Used to diagnose and monitor eye diseases and disorders
    • Important for occupations requiring good vision, such as pilots, drivers, and surgeons

Definition and Measurement of Visual Acuity

    • Visual acuity measures the ability to see objects clearly and in detail
    • Measured by the smallest detail visible at a certain distance (usually 20 feet or 6 meters)
    • Expressed as a fraction (e.g. 20/20 or 6/6), where top number is testing distance and bottom number is distance a normal eye can see the same detail

    Normal Visual Acuity

    • 20/20 or 6/6 is considered normal visual acuity
    • Means an individual with normal vision can see objects clearly at 20 feet that a normal eye can also see at 20 feet

    Abnormal Visual Acuity

    • Less than 20/20 indicates nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism
    • Greater than 20/20 indicates exceptional visual acuity

    Factors Affecting Visual Acuity
