Virus Classification
- Virus families are classified based on their Baltimore classification system
- DNA viruses are grouped into several classes (e.g., Herpesviruses, Adenoviruses, Poxviruses, Parvoviruses)
- RNA viruses are also categorized into classes (e.g., Picornaviruses, Orthomyxoviruses, Retroviruses, etc.)
Herpesviruses
- Herpesviruses are broadly classified into three subfamilies: alpha, beta, and gamma
- HSV-1 and HSV-2 cause oral and genital herpes, respectively
- Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes chickenpox and shingles
- Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is commonly associated with infectious mononucleosis
- Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a cofactor in some human cancers
Adenoviruses
- Adenoviruses are linear double-stranded DNA viruses
- They have a large size range between 30-38 kbp in size
Poliovirus
- One of the first viruses to be propagated in cell culture
- It was also one of the first to be plaque purified
