When lining them up, if a number has too few digits, you fill it out by putting zeros after the last digit. For example, when adding 78 + 23, if written correctly, you would have 78 at the top, a zero below it, below the zero you would write 2, and finally a three. Then starting from the rightmost column (the units column) going all the way to the left, you add each pair of numbers in a single column. If the total adds up to ten or more, you carry over the ones to the next column to the left. This continues until there's only a single result remaining. So if the final answer was 101, you know that 78 plus 23 equals 101.
