    Study Notes

    Vertebral Canal

    • The vertebral canal narrows progressively from top to bottom.
    • The canal is closed anteriorly by vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs, and posteriorly by laminae and ligamenta flava.
    • Laterally, the canal is formed by pedicles, which are narrower than the height of vertebral bodies.
    • Intervertebral foramina are formed between adjacent pedicles, defining the upper and lower boundaries of each foramen.

    Intervertebral Foramina

    • In the thoracic and lumbar regions, the front boundary of each intervertebral foramen is primarily the lower part of a vertebra's body and the intervertebral disc.
    • In the thoracic region: Fig. 6.92
    • In the lumbar region: Fig. 6.93
    • The back boundary comes from the facet joint and its capsule.
    • In the cervical region, a small portion of the vertebral body below the disc is included in the anterior boundary (Fig. 6.88).
