Russian Case Grammar
Russian has six grammatical cases, which indicate the grammatical function of a noun or pronoun in a sentence. Here are the key facts and concepts for each of the five main cases:
Nominative
- Marks the subject of the sentence
- Typically used for nouns and pronouns that are performing the action
- No special ending for nouns, but pronouns have specific nominative forms
- Examples:
- Я читаю книгу (I am reading a book) - Я is in the nominative case
- Книга лежит на столе (The book is lying on the table) - Книга is in the nominative case
Genitive
- Marks possession or relationship
- Typically used to indicate "of" or "belonging to"
- Endings for nouns: -а, -и, -ы, -ей, -ев, -ов
- Examples:
- Книга моего друга (The book of my friend) - моего is in the genitive case
- День рождения матери (Mother's birthday) - матери is in the genitive case
Dative
- Marks the indirect object
- Typically used to indicate "to" or "for"
- Endings for nouns: -е, -и, -ам, -ям
- Examples:
- Я дам книгу другу (I will give the book to a friend) - другу is in the dative case
- Я пишу письмо матери (I am writing a letter to mother) - матери is in the dative case
Accusative
- Marks the direct object
- Typically used to indicate "whom" or "what" is affected by the action
- Endings for nouns: -у, -и, -ы, -ей, -ев, -ов
- Examples:
- Я читаю книгу (I am reading a book) - книгу is in the accusative case
- Я видел друга (I saw a friend) - друга is in the accusative case
Instrumental
- Marks the means by which an action is performed
- Typically used to indicate "with" or "by"
- Endings for nouns: -ом, -им, -ами, -ями
- Examples:
- Я пишу ручкой (I am writing with a pen) - ручкой is in the instrumental case
- Я иду в парке с другом (I am walking in the park with a friend) - с другом is in the instrumental case
