    Study Notes

Checking Your Vehicle Before a Journey:

    • Brakes: Check for spongy feeling, slackness, and pulling to one side.
    • Tyre Pressure: Refer to the manufacturer's guide for recommended pressures. Use a reliable pressure gauge. Check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold. Remember to check the spare tyre and replace valve caps.
    • Head Restraint: Adjust the head restraint so the rigid part is at least as high as your eyes or the top of your ears, and as close to the back of your head as comfortable. Some head restraints may not be adjustable in certain cars.
    • Tyres: Ensure sufficient tread depth (1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre’s width and around the entire circumference) and check for any cuts, bulges or other damage.
    • Headlights and Tail Lights: Turn on the ignition (if necessary) and check the headlights and tail lights are working. You can walk around the vehicle to see if all lights are operational.
    • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS): The warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the ABS system.
    • Direction Indicators: Turn on the ignition (if necessary) and check the direction indicators are working. You can use the hazard warning lights or check the reflections around the vehicle.
    • Brake Lights: Operate the brake pedal and use reflections in windows or doors to check the brake lights are operational. You can ask someone to assist you.
    • Power-Assisted Steering: Before starting the journey, check that the steering is not particularly "heavy". Gentle pressure on the steering wheel while starting the engine should result in a noticeable movement as the system activates. Alternatively, turn the steering wheel just after moving off to confirm the power assistance is functioning.
    • Rear Fog Lights: Switch on the rear fog lights (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Ensure the warning light is on. Use rear fog lights only in conditions of extremely reduced visibility, typically when you cannot see further than 100 meters.
    • Headlights: Switch between dipped and main beam. Check the main beam warning light is illuminated when using the main beam.

    Engine Checks:

    • Engine Oil: Identify the dipstick/oil level indicator. Wipe the dipstick clean, insert it fully, then remove it again. The oil level should be between the minimum and maximum markers. Top up if necessary, but avoid overfilling.
    • Engine Coolant: Identify the high and low level markings on the header tank (if fitted) or the radiator filler cap. Top up to the correct level with a water and anti-freeze mix, but only when the engine is cold.
