Study Notes
Vehicle Inspection Importance
- Primary reason for vehicle inspection is safety for yourself and others on the road.
Trip Safety Checks
- Monitor gauges for potential issues.
- Utilize senses (sight, hearing, smell, touch) to detect problems.
- Inspect critical items when stopping: tires, brakes, lights, electrical connections, trailer coupling devices, and cargo securement.
Key Steering System Parts
- Components include steering wheel, shaft, gearbox, pitman arm, tie rods, and power steering cylinder.
Suspension System Defects
- Suspension system supports vehicle and load; defects can be dangerous.
- Look for cracked or broken spring hangers and missing parts in leaf springs.
- Any single leaf missing could render the vehicle "out of service".
- Inspect for damaged air suspension systems and loose frame members.
Emergency Equipment Requirements
- Must carry spare electrical fuses (or circuit breakers).
- Have three red reflective triangles, six fusees, or three liquid burning flares.
- Keep a properly charged fire extinguisher on hand.
Tire Tread Depth
- Minimum tread depth for front tires is 4/32 inch; for all other tires, it is 2/32 inch.
- No fabric should be visible through the tread or sidewall.
Front of Vehicle Inspection
- Check condition of front axle, steering system, and for any loose or damaged parts.
- Ensure windshield is clean, wiper arms have proper tension, and lights/reflectors are functioning.
- Inspect condition of left and right front wheels, brakes, fuel tanks, and cargo securement.
Wheel Bearing Seal Checks
- Ensure that wheel bearing seals are not leaking to maintain proper functionality.
Reflective Triangles Requirement
- Carry three red reflective triangles as part of your safety equipment.
Testing Hydraulic Brakes for Leaks
- For hydraulic brakes, pump the pedal Thr ee times, then hold firm pressure. If the pedal drops, there may be a leak.
Starter Switch Safety
- Keep the starter switch key in your pocket during pre-trip inspection to prevent unauthorized vehicle operation.
