General Guidelines
- Follow 100 series SOGs for Pre-Incident Planning and Communication.
- Refer to 200 series SOGs for Incident Management and Accountability guidelines.
- Consult 300 series SOGs for General Operations.
- Focus on 400 series SOGs, especially 420 series for tactical guidelines.
Response Protocol
- Communication Center may provide hydrant availability during response.
- First arriving unit may request additional units based on:
- Visibility and reported conditions.
- Knowledge of the roadway and water supply.
- Any unusual circumstances.
Tactical Considerations for Vehicle Fires
- Position units to block traffic and hazards; refer to SOG 310-01 for Traffic Operations.
- Prioritize blocking Safe Work Area when smoke is low and moving with traffic.
- First approach vehicle fires from a 45-degree angle from the sides.
- Avoid approaching from the front or rear due to hazards from hoods and airbags.
- Utilize a minimum of 1 ¾” pre-connected hose line flowing at least 100 GPM for fire attack.
- Disconnect both positive and negative battery cables before engagement.
- Search the entire vehicle, including the trunk, for possible victims.
Responsibilities
First Arriving Unit
- Establish Incident Command; manage until transferred or terminated.
- Provide an Arrival Report as per SOG 420-01.
Incident Command
- Manage incidents per SOG 200-02.
- Ensure communication of benchmarks (SOG 210-01).
- Assign an Incident Safety Officer and ensure PPE compliance.
- Ensure personnel accountability (SOG 220-01) and follow two-in/two-out rule (SOG 220-02).
- Assess for any patients and consider requesting a Fire Investigator.
Company Responsibilities
- Company Officer to communicate benchmarks and progress reports.
Firefighter Responsibilities
- All firefighters to follow safety protocols and applicable SOGs.
- Full PPE and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) required during operations.
