Subject-verb agreement involves ensuring that the verb form matches the subject. The verb must agree with its subject in terms of number (singular or plural) and sometimes in tense. Incorrect subject-verb agreement can lead to confusion and make sentences hard to understand. To ensure proper subject-verb agreement, follow these general guidelines: singular subjects take singular verbs; plural subjects take plural verbs. If the subject noun phrase has both singular and plural components, use the verb of the nearer component.

Verb Tense

Verb tense indicates the time frame of actions or events described by a verb. There are four major verb tenses in English: present, past, future, and perfect. The present tense shows things happening now, the past tense shows things happened before, the future tense shows things will happen later, and the perfect tense shows completed actions that happened either now or in the past.
