Overview of Vascular Treatments with IPL

    • Vascular treatments using IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) are used to remove visible enlarged blood vessels on the face and other parts of the body.
    • These dilated blood vessels, also known as telangiectasia, are fine, red veins commonly found on the nose, chin, and cheeks.
    • They can appear as a result of aging, pregnancy, childbirth, birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, sun damage, and Rosacea.
    • IPL works by targeting the chromophore oxyhaemoglobin in small capillaries in the upper dermis, using light energy to destroy the blood vessels.
    • The treatment is conducted over multiple sessions, typically 3+ treatments, spaced 3-4 weeks apart.
    • The location of the damaged capillaries is in the epidermal junction.
    • IPL is not recommended for treating leg veins, as the circulatory system in the legs is more advanced and the effectiveness of treatment is minimal.
    • Vascular lesions that can be treated with IPL include telangiectasia, spider nevi, Rosacea/diffuse redness, acne rosacea, cherry angioma, couperose, sun damage, and poikiloderma.
    • Spider nevi are swollen blood vessels beneath the skin surface, with a central red spot and reddish extensions.
    • Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterized by facial redness, dilated blood vessels, papules, pustules, and swelling.
    • Sun damage can cause various skin conditions, including dry skin, sunburn, actinic keratosis, pigmentation changes, wrinkles, and redness.
    • Couperose is a condition where small dilated red blood vessels are visible on the face, causing a prolonged red complexion.
    • Vascular treatments with IPL may have side effects such as erythema, swelling, and darkening of the treated area, but these are temporary and can be managed with proper aftercare.
