User Research

User research aims to understand why visitors come to a site and what they want to accomplish once there. It helps product designers know who their users are, what brings them to websites, and what makes them leave. Qualitative user research includes techniques like contextual inquiries, which involve observing users in their natural environment; ethnography, where researchers immerse themselves into the lives of users; or focus groups that gather opinions of multiple individuals at one time. Quantitative user research relies on data gathered through analytics tools and surveys.

Effective user research requires planning, organizing, and executing tasks across several phases. These phases include defining objectives and questions, recruiting for user interviews, conducting user interviews, synthesizing findings, and developing actionable next steps based on user insights. Additionally, user researchers must balance conflicting goals such as honoring commitments made during recruitment while also ensuring those who signed up actually complete their task.
