U.S. History: 1780-1800
During the years of 1780-1800, several significant events shaped American history. This period was marked by the end of the Revolutionary War, the establishment of the United States government, the growth of industry, and changes in social structures.
End of the Revolutionary War
The British withdrew from New York City in November 1783, signifying the end of the war. In July 1784, the Treaty of Paris was signed, officially ending the conflict between Great Britain and the thirteen states of America. With peace restored, people could turn their attention to building a new nation.
Establishment of the US Government
In September 1787, delegates gathered in Philadelphia to amend the Articles of Confederation, which were deemed unworkable. Out of these conventions came the United States Constitution, which established a strong federal government with three branches. The first Congress convened in New York City on March 4, 1789, and it began to establish many of the institutions we know today, including the Department of State, the Treasury Department, the Post Office, and the United States Army.
Growth of Industry
In 1784, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, revolutionizing farming in the South. Cotton became king, and slavery expanded westward with it, creating tension over its expansion into new territories. Meanwhile, back east, inventors such as Samuel Slater introduced water power to spinning machinery, beginning the Industrial Revolution in America.
Changes in Social Structures
As America grew, so did inequality. The richest 5% owned more than half the wealth, while 70% of the population had little above subsistence living conditions. Slavery also continued to be a divisive issue, leading to tensions between northern and southern states over slavery's expansion into new territory.
Despite these challenges, Americans faced them head-on, shaping the future trajectory of our country.
