Upper Limb Anatomy
- The upper limb has 32 bones
- Arm bone: Humerus
- Shoulder: Clavicle & Scapula
- Forearm: Radius & Ulna
- Hand: 8 Carpals, 5 Metacarpals, 14 Phalanges
- Fingers are counted from lateral to medial
- The fingers except the thumb have 3 phalanges each
Joints of Upper Limb
- Acromio-clavicular joint
- Shoulder joint
- Superior/Proximal radioulnar joint
- Elbow joint
- Inferior/Distal radioulnar joint
- Intercarpal joint (mid-carpal)
- Metacarpophalangeal joint (MPJ)
- Interphalangeal joint (IPJ)
- Every joint moves
Muscles of Upper Limb
- Regions: Shoulder, back, pectoral region, arm, hand, forearm
- Pectoral region: Pectoralis major, Pectoralis minor, Subclavius, Serratus anterior
- The back region contains: Trapezius, Latissimus dorsi, Levator scapulae, Rhomboids major, Rhomboids minor
- Shoulder: Deltoid, Teres major, Teres minor, Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Subscapularis
- Arm: Biceps brachii, Brachialis, Coracobrachialis, Triceps brachii (posterior)
- Forearm: Brachioradialis, Anconeus, Supinator, Pronator teres, Flexor digitorum profundus, Extensor carpi radialis longus, Extensor carpi radialis brevis
- Hand: Lumbricals (writing position)
Arteries of Upper Limb
- First rib
- Subclavian artery
- Branches of the subclavian artery:
- Axillary artery
- Brachial artery
- Radial artery
- Ulnar artery
- Anterior, Posterior Circumflex humeral
- Profunda brachii
Veins of Upper Limb
- Subclavian vein
- Axillary vein
- Cephalic vein
- Basilic vein
- Cubital vein
Lymphatic Drainage of Upper Limb
- Parasternal lymph nodes
- Axillary lymph nodes
- Rectus diaphragmatic lymph nodes
Nerves of Upper Limb
- Brachial plexus (nerves from spinal cord form this plexus)
- Cervical & Thoracic nerves provide sensory + motor function
- Nerves of Brachial Plexus:
- Musculocutaneous nerve
- Axillary nerve
- Radial nerve
- Ulnar nerve
