Study Notes
Upper Back and Shoulder: Scapula Stabilization
- Trapezius: Extends, elevates, and retracts the scapula. Active when both sides work together.
- Levator Scapulae: Elevates the scapula.
- Rhomboids: Retract the scapula.
- Serratus Anterior: Protracts and depresses the scapula. Also involved in ribs 1-8 protraction.
- Pectoralis Minor: Depresses and protracts the scapula
Scapular Stabilization - Relevant Anatomy
- Scapula: The flat bone that connects to the clavicle and humerus.
- Clavicle: The collar bone
- Occiput & Thoracic vertebrae: C1-4; and T1-5, are related to scapular movement
- Coracoid Process: On the scapula, it connects to the ribs 3-5
- Ribs: Attach to the thoracic vertebrae and support breathing.
Scapular Function in Common Actions
- Head Extension: The trapezious is important
- Pulling: Rhomoboids and other muscles are needed.
- Pressing: Serratus anterior is involved
- Punching: Rhomboids, trapezius
- Press-ups: Trapezius, Serratus anterior and other muscles involved.
- Breathing: Serratus anterior helps in forced inhalation.
