Study Notes

Meteorology

  • The study of the atmosphere and its phenomena, including weather and climate.

The Life Sciences (Biology)

  • Botany: The study of plants.
  • Zoology: The study of animals and animal life.
  • Genetics: The study of heredity.
  • Medicine: The study of diagnosing, treating, and preventing illness, disease, and injury.

Scientific Method

  • A logical method used to acquire knowledge to explain different phenomena in nature.
  • Six basic steps:
    • Identify and clearly state the problem.
    • Gather information pertinent to the problem.
    • (Steps 3-6 not mentioned in the text)

Formation of Solar System

  • A star formed in the Milky Way Galaxy, eventually igniting and burning its usable hydrogen and other elements.
  • The star exploded, sending matter out in all directions, which eventually cooled and collected to form planets and the asteroid belt.
  • The asteroid belt is an early form of the collection of matter that was not able to completely form a planet due to Jupiter's gravity.
  • Some early planets may have collided with other early planets, creating larger planets, moons, or space rocks.

Earth's Structure

  • The earth consists of several layers: the core, the mantle, and the crust.
  • The core is the inner part of the earth, the crust is the outer part, and the mantle is between them.
  • The earth is surrounded by the atmosphere.

Dissolution (or Solution)

  • Several common minerals, such as halite and calcite, dissolve in water.
  • Limestone and marble contain calcite and are soluble in acidic water.
  • Marble tombstones and carvings are susceptible to chemical weathering by dissolution.
  • Caves and caverns typically form in limestone due to dissolution.
  • Speleothems are cave formations made of calcite and form a rock called travertine.
  • Stalactites hang from the ceiling, and stalagmites are on the ground.
  • Karst topography forms on limestone terrain and is characterized by caves, sinkholes, disappearing streams, and springs.

Air Pollution

  • Air pollution occurs when large amounts of dust, soot, bacteria, and other harmful gases enter the air.
  • Main sources of air pollution in the Philippines are industry and transportation.
  • Major air pollutants include:
    • Ozone: formed when nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds mix in sunlight, causing health problems such as asthma and sore throats.
    • Nitrogen dioxide: a reddish-brown gas coming from power plants and cars, causing coughs, shortness of breath, and a higher chance of health problems with long-term exposure.
