UP Math-Physics Society History & Logo

• The UP Math-Physics Society is the first and oldest academic organization at UPB.
• It was established on November 19, 1975, and is approaching its 50th anniversary.
• The society was founded by Prof. Priscilla Supnet-Macansantos, Prof. Reynaldo Rimando, and Ma’am Teresita Natividad.
• It was founded to promote advancement and utility in Mathematics and Physics and provide a medium for Math & Physics majors to cultivate interest in these fields.

Logo

• The society's logo has 8 elements embodying the principles, mission, vision, and identity of the Society, created in 1977 by Mr. Arnulfo Aquino.
• A triangular three-dimensional image symbolizes the three founders.
• An infinity lace represents the unlimited applications of Math & Physics in the real world and includes MCMLXXV (1975).
• The positive, negative, and nil signs classify applications as beneficial (transportation & forecasting), destructive (nuclear weapons), and neutral (video games & telecommunications).
• 75 ln (natural logarithmic) signs signify the year the society was founded.
• A black hole and shadow represent the mysterious future that Math & Physics may bring, especially to society members.
• The hourglass symbolizes the limitation society members face, especially regarding time spent in college.
• A circular plate holds the name of the organization, epitomizing the continuous struggle of the society and its members to continue what the pioneers started and pursue its mission.
• Polar coordinates are also part of the logo.

Events

• The society holds 11 events: Mass Orientation, The Search for Mathalinong Phyreshman, Mathphynasaya, Applicant’s Soiree, Lecture Series, Statistics Quiz Show, Anniversary Celebration, Anniversary Food Sale, AMPIQS Annual Math-Physics Interschool Quiz Show, The Search for Mathalinong Feeling Phyreshman, and NMPPEC National Math-Physics Photo Essay Contest.
• The Mass Orientation is the first event each academic year, seeking new members and informing them about the society's history, ideals, guiding principles, and events.
• "The Search for Mathalinong Phyreshman" is the first main activity every academic year, encouraging freshmen to learn more about math and physics. It was first staged in 2000.
• Mathphynasaya is a competition with themes combined with math & physics questions, first created in 2016 due to the absence of freshmen caused by the K-12 program.
• The Applicant’s Soiree welcomes new members, allowing them to get to know each other, residents, and alumni, and learn about the society's ethics, guiding principles, and ideals.
• The Lecture Series provides updates in Math & Physics to high school students and guides them in having a new perspective on those fields. It was first staged in 1977.
• The Statistics Quiz Show, in partnership with DMCS, is open to all freshmen. The top three represent the university in the regional collegiate statistics quiz show. It was first staged on September 15, 2005.
• The Anniversary Celebration is a getaway for members and alumni during the society’s anniversary weekend to relax, take a break, and plan upcoming events.
• The Anniversary Food Sale is an income-generating project held every November to fund the society’s upcoming events and anniversary celebration.
• AMPIQS (Annual Math-Physics Interschool Quiz Show) is the biggest event, first staged in 1989. Initially Baguio-wide, it expanded to Luzon in 2014, with the goal to extend on a national level. It is for high school students.
• "The Search for Mathalinong Feeling Phyreshman", started in 2016 due to k to 12, is a fun quiz show about general knowledge, general science, and trivia.
• The NMPPEC (National Math-Physics Photo Essay Contest) is a photo essay contest with themes focusing on social issues involving science and technology, spearheaded by the Marketing Committee.

Committees

• The Secretariat Committee encodes documents, compiles records, and documents meetings, headed by the Secretary.
• The Finance Committee collects semestral fees and oversees the organization’s budget, headed by the treasurer.
• The Membership Committee handles applications for new and honorary members and is responsible for residents' renewal, inactivity, disciplinary actions, disqualifications, and officer recall, headed by the Vice President.
• The External Affairs Committee coordinates with other organizations, individuals, and institutions inside and outside the campus.
• The Marketing Committee handles budgeting during events and spearheads marketing events like NMPPEC and Food Sales.
• The Research and Tutorials Committee researches information for events, provides tutorial services, and handles the Lecture Series.
• The Socio-cultural committee handles publication materials.
• The Technicals and Programme Committee handles technical aspects during events and manages the organization's social media accounts.
• "Sipnayan at liknayan tungo sa patuloy na pag-unlad ng bayan" is the organization's motto.
