Study Notes

UOI 3: Revision Worksheets

  • Combining Like Terms: Terms with the same variables raised to the same powers are like terms. Combining like terms involves adding or subtracting the coefficients of those terms.

  • Coefficients: The numerical factor in a term. For example, in the term 3x, 3 is the coefficient.

  • Expressions: A combination of variables, numbers, and operations. Examples are 3x – 5y – 9 and x + 4x.

  • Terms: The individual parts of an expression that are separated by addition or subtraction. Example 3x, -5y and -9 in the expression 3x - 5y - 9 are individual terms

  • Inverse Operations: Operations that undo each other. In arithmetic these include addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, squarerooting and squaring and finding the inverse of a fraction.

  • Simplifying Expressions: Combining like terms to obtain a simpler equivalent expression. For example, x + 4x simplifies to 5x.

  • Fact Families: Two or more related facts or equations that involve the same numbers. Often related by addition and subtraction, or multiplication and division.

  • Example Fact Family: Given a mathematical equation or problem, identifying two or more related facts using the same numbers involved in that problem.
