Study Notes
Gingival Tissues
- Gingiva is part of the intraoral soft tissues (oral mucosa) that surrounds the cervical portions of the teeth and covers the alveolar processes and tooth up to the CEJ.
- The gingival margin is located coronal to the CEJ of each tooth and attaches to the tooth by a specialized type of epithelial tissue (Junctional epithelium).
- Gingiva is divided into four anatomical areas: Free gingiva, Gingival sulcus, Interdental papilla, and Attached Gingiva.
Gingival Sulcus
- The gingival sulcus is the gap between free gingiva and the tooth surface.
- The gingival sulcus is attached to the tooth surface (cementum) by the epithelium.
- The base of the sulcus is formed by the junctional epithelium.
- No fluid is found in healthy gingival sulcus.
- Fluid flow increases in the presence of dental plaque biofilm, resulting in gingival inflammation.
Interdental Gingiva
- Interdental gingiva is the part of the gingiva that fills in the spaces between the teeth and the tooth contact (dental embrasures).
- It is also described as the interdental papilla.
- Occupies the embrasure (the interproximal space between the area of tooth contact).
- The interproximal shape of the interdental papilla is determined by the tooth contacts.
- Shape: Triangular / āVā shape.
Gingival Col
- Valley-like depression in the portion of the interdental gingiva that lies directly apical to the contact area of two adjacent teeth.
- Col is not present if the adjacent teeth are not in contact.
Attached Gingiva
- The attached gingiva is the area of the gingiva that is attached to bone.
- It is the gingival tissue between the free gingiva and the alveolar mucosa.
