Study Notes
Toronto Paramedic Services and TFS Response
- If Paramedic Services cancels a TFS response, they notify the TFS Communications Centre.
- If TFS arrives on the scene and the Paramedic Services crew has made patient contact, they offer assistance (e.g., egress route, blocker vehicle, vehicle stabilization, disconnecting batteries, setting up a stretcher).
- If no assistance is needed, the TFS crew may clear immediately.
Patient Care and Information
- Paramedics are Health Information Custodians under PHIPA, responsible for keeping patient information private.
- TFS personnel are not entitled to patient information unless providing care.
- If TFS provides care, they gather approximate age, vital signs, actions taken, and services provided for continuity of care.
Patient Transport
- Paramedic Services are responsible for patient transport using a provincially regulated unit.
- TFS staff are not permitted to transport patients in TFS apparatus.
Other Healthcare Providers on Scene
- Other healthcare providers (e.g., doctors, nurses, Hatzoloh) operate in the greater Toronto area.
- TFS personnel cooperate with these providers, but do not prevent their delivery of care if it exceeds TFS capabilities.
- TFS personnel assist with patient care within their training level.
Do Not Resuscitate Incidents
- All TFS personnel must be familiar with Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal/Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Do Not Resuscitate Confirmation (DNRC) forms.
- DNR orders express a patient's wish to not be resuscitated in the event of a cardiac arrest.
- Firefighters honor a DNR order only when presented with a valid DNRC form, which contains a unique serial number, OFM and Ministry of Health logos, and completed fields (patient's name, tick box, and physician/nurse signature).
- TFS personnel perform a patient assessment, confirm the physical condition, and take appropriate steps to maintain dignity and inform family/caregivers.
Incident Reporting
- The Company Officer documents the event in the Narrative of the Emergency Incident Report, including the unique DNRC serial number.
- All personnel attending the incident complete a Witness Statement to document their actions and observations.
