Medical Emergency Procedure
- Check the scene for safety
- Check the passenger's health status
- Call the captain to contact Stat MD and page for medical assistance
- Bring the AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and care for the passenger
Care Procedure
- A: Airway (head tilt, chin left)
- B: Breathing (listen for 10 seconds)
- C: Circulation/Signs of life
CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
- 30 compressions, 2 breaths for anyone
- Use direct pressure to stop bleeding
- Use gauge and add more pressure if bleeding continues
AED
- Use for cardiac emergencies, heart attack, or unconsciousness with no detectable signs of life
- Turn it on and follow the instructions
- Use for adults, children, and infants according to weight and age
Choking
- Full airway obstruction: use 5 back blows, repeat until object comes out or the person passes out
- Partial airway obstruction: encourage the person to cough
- Infant: use 5 back blows and forth until object comes out or the infant passes out
Unconscious Choking
- Signs of hypoxia: euphoria, dizziness, happy, high, disoriented, turning blue
- Use CPR and AED if necessary
Burns
- 3rd degree full-thickness burn: burn to the bone, skin and soft tissue are black and burnt
- 2nd degree burn: 2 layers of skin are burnt, treat the same as 1st degree but don't pop blisters
- Treat burns with cool water
Medical Assistive Devices
- Fr2: old, has data chip, and comes with 2 sets of adult pads and 1 set of child/infant pads
- Frx: new, has info inside, and comes with 2 sets of adult pads, 1 set of child/infant pads, and a key
- Use Frx with the key, not without it
- POB (Portable Oxygen Bottle): make sure to turn it all the way off and don't let the pressure drop below 500 psi
Miscellaneous
- Electrical burn on an airplane: avoid circuits and electrical devices in the lavatory
- EMK (Emergency Medical Kit): the green seal indicates it's good to go
- Medical jewelry, wallet, or phone can provide important information
- Don't store medication, only give it in extreme cases
- Stat MD is available 24/7 and can be called anytime for authority to fly
- Put on gloves first in any medical situation
