Present Simple Tense

Affirmative Form

  • Used to describe habits and routines, general truths, and fixed schedules
  • Formation: Subject + base form of the verb
  • Examples:
    • I wake up at 7:00 am (habit/routine)
    • She eats breakfast at 8:00 am (habit/routine)
    • They live in Paris (general truth)

Negative Form

  • Used to describe habits and routines that do not happen, general truths that are not true, and fixed schedules that do not exist
  • Formation: Subject + do/does not + base form of the verb
  • Examples:
    • I don't wake up at 7:00 am (habit/routine that doesn't happen)
    • She doesn't eat breakfast at 8:00 am (habit/routine that doesn't happen)
    • They don't live in Paris (general truth that is not true)

Exception: Verb "to be"

  • Formation: Subject + is not/am not/are not
  • Examples:
    • I am not a student
    • She is not happy
    • They are not friends
