Study Notes
Descriptive Statistics
-
Summary measures: used to describe the basic features of a dataset
- Mean: average value of a dataset
- Median: middle value of a dataset when arranged in order
- Mode: most frequent value in a dataset
- Range: difference between the largest and smallest values in a dataset
- Variance: average of squared differences from the mean
- Standard deviation: square root of variance
Data Distribution
- Normal distribution: a bell-shaped distribution where mean, median, and mode are equal
- Skewed distribution: an asymmetric distribution where mean, median, and mode are not equal
- Bimodal distribution: a distribution with two peaks
Data Visualization
-
Univariate plots: used to visualize a single variable
- Histograms: display the distribution of a single variable
- Box plots: display a summary of a single variable
-
Bivariate plots: used to visualize the relationship between two variables
- Scatter plots: display the relationship between two variables
- Bar charts: compare two variables
-
Multivariate plots: used to visualize the relationship between multiple variables
- Heatmaps: display the relationship between multiple variables
- Parallel coordinates: display the relationship between multiple variables
Inferential Statistics
-
Hypothesis testing: used to make conclusions about a population based on a sample
- Null hypothesis (H0): a statement of no effect or difference
- Alternative hypothesis (H1): a statement of an effect or difference
- Test statistics: used to determine the significance of the results
- p-values: used to determine the significance of the results
-
Confidence intervals: used to estimate a population parameter based on a sample
- Margin of error: the amount of error in the estimate
- Confidence level: the degree of confidence in the estimate (e.g. 95%)
Survey Design
-
Types of surveys: used to collect data from a sample of participants
- Cross-sectional surveys: collect data at a single point in time
- Longitudinal surveys: collect data over a period of time
- Experimental surveys: used to test the effect of an intervention
-
Sampling techniques: used to select a representative sample from a population
- Random sampling: each participant has an equal chance of being selected
- Stratified sampling: participants are selected based on specific characteristics (e.g. age, gender)
- Convenience sampling: participants are selected based on ease of access
