- Acquired through contemplating the wonders of Nature and with the aid of the intelligence that the Grand Architect of the Universe (GAOTU) has endowed on humans.

- To know oneself and correct one's faults with the chisel of morality.
- Acquired by studying the senses, liberal arts, and the faculties needed to exercise those senses.

- These senses convey to the understanding mind that which they perceive, and these impressions in turn condition behavior.
The Blazing Star

- Second journey: learned about the five orders of architecture and the importance of proportions in building one's morality.
- Third journey: learned about the seven liberal arts and their influence on human society.
- Fourth journey: learned about the properties of the sphere and its relation to natural phenomena.
- Fifth journey: empty-handed, with no new knowledge, but with the understanding to deduce consequences and instruct others.

- Fellow-Crafts recognize each other through signs, words, and tokens.
- Obligate themselves never to reveal the mysteries of the Second degree after completing the journeys.
