Study Notes

Mobile Computing & Mobile Network

  • Mobile Computing: an umbrella term that describes technologies enabling people to access services anytime and anywhere
  • Other names/overlapping computing paradigms:
    • Nomadic Computing (mobile computing)
    • Pervasive Computing (anytime and everywhere)
    • Ubiquitous Computing (anytime and everywhere)
    • Embedded Computing (embedded in a larger system)
    • Real-Time Systems (timing requirements)
    • Wireless Networks (wireless radios)
    • Wireless Sensor Networks (connected sensors)
    • (Mobile) Ad-Hoc Networks (dynamic network formation)
    • Internet of Things or IoT ("smart things" connected to the Internet)
  • Mobile Computing has three main components:
    • Mobile Hardware/Devices
    • Mobile Software
    • Mobile (wireless) communication

Mobile Network

  • Enables wireless communication using mobile devices, such as cell phones, smartphones, or tablets
  • Provides necessary infrastructure and operated by mobile phone providers
  • Consists of:
    • Access network (establishes wireless connection to terminal devices by radio)
    • Core network (connects individual access points, ensuring mobile users can exchange information with those using other access networks or external networks)

Evolution of Mobile Computing

  • Characterized by 7 technological factors:
    • Portability (reducing size of hardware)
    • Miniaturization (creating smaller mobile form factors)
    • Connectivity (developing devices and applications for wireless data networks)
    • Convergence (integrating emerging digital mobile devices)
    • Divergence (promoting information appliances with specialized functionality)
    • Applications (developing matter and substance for use and consumption on mobile devices)
    • Digital Ecosystems (making access to interactive application content easy and enjoyable)

Mobile Computing Constraints & Challenges

  • Mobile devices have smaller form factors than traditional desktops
  • Constraints on devices' space, weight, and form factors due to users being on the move while computing or connecting

Explore mobile computing and its related concepts, including nomadic, pervasive, ubiquitous, and embedded computing. Learn about wireless networks and real-time systems.
