External Genital Organs: Vulva
- The vulva includes:
- Labia majora: two fatty external folds of skin
- Labia minora: two smaller folds of mucous membrane
- Clitoris: a small erectile organ situated at the superior junction of the labia minora
- Vestibule: a cleft between the labia minora
Openings in the Vestibule
- Vaginal opening: lies in the posterior part of the vestibule, partially closed in virgins by the hymen
- Urethral opening: a small opening located anterior to the vaginal opening
Vagina
- Definition: a muscular tube extending from the vulva to the uterus
- Site: lies between the bladder and urethra (anterior) and rectum and anal canal (posterior)
- Functions: serves as the excretory passage for menstrual fluid, receives the penis during sexual intercourse, and forms the inferior part of the birth canal
Ovary
- Definition: the primary sex organ in females, producing oocytes (ova or eggs) and female sex hormones (estrogen and progesterone)
- Site: lies on the lateral wall of the pelvis, between the external and internal iliac vessels
- Ligaments: Ligament of ovary connects ovary to uterus, and Suspensory ligament of ovary connects ovary to the wall of the pelvis
Blood Supply of Internal Genital Organs
- Ovary: supplied by Ovarian artery (branch from Abdominal aorta) and drained by Ovarian vein (ends into IVC on the right side or left renal vein on the left side)
- Uterine tube: supplied by Uterine and ovarian arteries and drained by Uterine and ovarian veins
- Uterus: supplied by Uterine artery (branch from internal iliac artery) and drained by Uterine venous plexus (ends into internal iliac veins)
- Vagina: supplied by Vaginal artery (branch from internal iliac artery) and drained by Vaginal venous plexus (ends into internal iliac veins)
Uterus
- Definition: a hollow muscular pear-shaped organ
- Site: lies between the urinary bladder (anterior) and the rectum (posterior)
- Parts: divided into the fundus, body, and cervix (with supra vaginal and vaginal parts)
Uterine (Fallopian) Tubes
- Definition: muscular tubes extending from the uterus to the ovary
- Parts: divided into four parts: infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus, and intramural part
