• The volume of trade and traffic between East and West Africa is increasing due to the development of natural resources such as gold, diamond, copper, tin, groundnut, oil palm, coffee, and fruits.

• Water transport is cheaper than land and air transport for hauling bulky materials over long distances between continents.
• Modern passenger liners and cargo ships are equipped with radar, wireless, and navigation aids.
• The development of refrigerated chambers, tankers, and specialized ships has improved cargo transport.

• The Mediterranean-Indian Ocean Sea Route passes through the heart of the Old World and serves more countries and people than any other route.
• The Southern Atlantic Sea Route connects West European and West African countries with Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay in South America.
• The North Pacific Sea Route converges at Honolulu and connects Vancouver and Yokohama, reducing the travelling distance by half.
