Types of OCD
- Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is characterized by an exaggerated belief that one's body is deformed or defective in some specific way.
- People with BDD may seek extreme measures such as voluntary cosmetic surgery to fix their imagined defect or abnormality.
- Hallmark symptoms of BDD include disproportionate and persistent thoughts about the seriousness of one's symptoms of dysmorphic perception of body.
Other Disorders
- Hypochondria is an abnormal anxiety about one's health, especially with an unwarranted fear that one has a serious disease.
- Trichotillomania is a hair-pulling disorder.
- Hoarding Disorder is an obsession with keeping a large amount of unnecessary items.
- Excoriation Disorder is a pattern of behavior defined by recurrent picking at one's skin, resulting in lesions.
Somatic Symptom Disorder
- Somatic Symptom Disorder is characterized by physical symptoms that suggest medical disease, but have no basis in organic pathology.
- Symptoms are associated with psychosocial distress, and the individual focuses on the seriousness of the physical symptoms rather than the underlying psychosocial issues.
- There is an exaggerated, disproportionate, and persistent thought about the seriousness of one's symptoms.
- Psychological distress disrupts daily functioning.
- Symptoms may last 6 months to meet the diagnosis, and feels real to the patient.
- Examples of symptoms include extreme back, chest, or abdominal pain, and headaches.
Somatic Anxiety Related Disorders
- Malingering is the intentional fabrication of medical symptoms for the purpose of external gains.
- Factitious disorder is the intentional creation or exaggeration of symptoms, but without intent for a concrete benefit.
- Factitious disorder by Proxy is a caregiver who deliberately falsifies an illness in a vulnerable dependent.
- Conversion disorder is a loss of neurological or motor function in the face of stressors, with no organic causes to this abnormality.
Dissociative Identity Disorder
- Dissociative Identity Disorder is a feeling of disconnection from one's senses, thoughts, emotions, and behavior.
- The root cause of Dissociative Identity Disorder is childhood trauma in 90% of cases.
- Symptoms include memory loss (amnesia) of certain time periods, events, people, and personal information.
- A sense of being detached from oneself and one's emotions, blurred sense of identity, and a perception of people and things around as distorted and unreal.
Crisis and Panic Attack
- A panic state is usually brief and recurrent, lasting only 5-20 minutes, and resolves in 5-7 days.
- A crisis has a longer duration, lasting anywhere from 4-6 weeks.
- Clients experiencing a severe crisis state can manifest many different types of serious dysfunctional behaviors, such as confusion, aggression, disorganized personality, threatening of harm to self or others, and depression.
Nurse's Role
- The nurse's role includes prevention, equitable and sensitive care, teaching, support, and client-centered care.
- The nurse should prioritize self-awareness and use the "Pet's Ski's" approach.
