Narrative Devices
- Fantasy: a scene or section that deviates from reality in the narrative, invites the reader to expand their understanding or expectation, and contrasts with reality.
- Reality: the actual existence and truth in the narrative for the character(s), and a return to reality reinforces the contrast between imagined and real experiences.
Text Structure
- Climax or Turning Point: the peak event in the narrative, builds excitement or anticipation before the resolution, and marks a shift in the story.
- Contrast: a striking difference between two sections of a text, often between the opening and ending, and contrasts with the reader's expectations.
Time Shifts
- Flashback: a section set before the events of the main story, providing insight into something important or revealing new information.
- Flashforward: a section set after the events of the main story, building anticipation by giving insight into something important yet to happen.
Pacing and Focus
- One-sentence paragraphs: a single sentence standing alone, creating a turning point or climax, or providing a sudden jolt to the reader.
- Clear setting: establishing the time and place of the events, enhancing the story by putting the plot in a specific context.
Character Development
- New character introduced: a significant character enters the narrative, revealing something significant about the protagonist through their relationship, dialogue, or encounter.
- Dialogue: conversation between characters, introducing or developing a character or plot, and often used to change the pace of the narrative.
