Unlocking the Science of Eye Contact

Eye contact elicits positive social signals and affect-related psychophysiological responses in the observer. The physical presence of the other person may be necessary for some of these effects, but being seen by the other person is essential for many. Live eye contact and eye contact over a video call elicit these responses, but not when watching a mere video of the other person.Tutkimukseen osallistui 63 suomenkielistä henkilöä, joilla ei ollut neurologisia tai psykiatrisia sairauksia. Koe koostui kolmesta eri tilanteesta: suoraan henkilön kanssa olevasta vuorovaikutuksesta, videopuhelusta ja videon katselusta. Stimulus oli kasvojen ilmeettömät kasvot, jotka suuntasivat katseensa joko suoraan eteenpäin tai noin 30 astetta vasemmalle tai oikealle. Osallistujat arvioivat subjektiivisia arvoja ja herättävyyttä suoralle ja kääntyneelle katseelle kaikissa tilanteissa. However, this effect was not observed in response to a visually similar video presentation without interaction. The facial EMG responses showed increased zygomatic activity and decreased corrugator activity in response to direct gaze, regardless of the presentation form or bidirectional communication. The study suggests that being seen by another individual is essential for the autonomic arousal effect, while physical presence is not. The results support a second-person approach to social cognition research and highlight the importance of interaction over observation. However, subjective evaluations of valence and arousal did not differ between gaze directions or conditions, and the study design has some limitations.
