Study Notes
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
- UDL is a framework that provides options to proactively address learner variability.
- Variability is the norm, not the exception.
- UDL examples in daily life: Curb cuts, electric doors, captions on TV, easy-grip tools, e-books, echo devices.
- UDL is an instructional planning and delivery framework intended to increase meaningful access and reduce barriers to learning for all students.
UDL Principles
- Multiple Means of Representation: Provide information and content in multiple formats (audio, visual, kinesthetic).
- Multiple Means of Action and Expression: Provide multiple options for students to demonstrate their learning (computer, verbal/sign description, physical demonstration, photo choices).
- Engagement: Stimulate students' interests and motivation for learning in a variety of ways.
Applying UDL in PE
- Starts by defining goals, assessing learner needs and evaluating barriers.
- Include a philosophy of flexibility in curriculum, make units fluid in instruction, implementation and planning.
- Plan and prepare to modify equipment, rules and instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
Adapting PE Activities
- Equipment/Materials: Modify equipment to ensure participation for all students (beeper balls, guide wires, Velcro mitts, longer rackets, softer balls).
- Rules: Deviate from the original rules to create a more inclusive environment (slowing the pace, taking away rules, allowing for no defender, limiting or adding responsibility).
- Environment: Modify the learning environment to reduce distractions and support participation (closing folding doors, covering windows that create glare, limiting noise).
- Instruction: Modify instruction by providing visual cues, modeling, physical assistance, tactile modeling, direct instruction, task teaching, guided discovery, and problem-solving.
Instructional Methods Employing UDL
- Inclusiveness: Create a classroom environment that respects and values diversity.
- Physical Access: Ensure classrooms, gymnasiums, fields, pools, and courts are accessible to individuals with a wide range of physical abilities.
- Delivery Modes: Utilize various modes to deliver content (demonstrations, posters, discussions, explanations, videos, hands-on activities).
- Interaction: Foster student interaction through class questions, discussions, group work, individual demonstrations, routines, station work, and group dances.
- Feedback: Provide prompt feedback and support during and after an activity.
- Assessment: Provide multiple ways for students to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and skills (group work, demonstrations, routines, station work, portfolios, presentations).
