Water pollution refers to the presence of harmful substances, often chemicals or microorganisms, in water bodies. These substances can contaminate a stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water, degrading water quality and rendering it toxic to humans or the environment. Water pollution is a growing concern due to the increased consumption of freshwater resources by agriculture and industry, as well as the lack of proper wastewater treatment facilities.

There are several types of water pollutants, including pathogenic microorganisms, putrescible organic waste, fertilizers and plant nutrients, toxic chemicals, sediments, heat, petroleum (oil), and radioactive substances. Some of the most common causes of water pollution include agricultural practices, industrial discharge, and domestic sewage.

Agricultural Practices

Agriculture is a significant contributor to water pollution due to the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and animal waste. Excessive use of these substances can lead to nutrient pollution, which can cause algal blooms and harm aquatic life. Petroleum (Oil) Pollution

Petroleum pollution occurs when oil from roads and parking lots is carried in surface runoff into water bodies. Accidental oil spills, such as the infamous Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989, can also cause extensive damage to aquatic ecosystems by contaminating water and damaging habitats.

Heat Pollution

Heat pollution, also known as thermal pollution, occurs when water bodies are heated above normal levels, which can harm aquatic life. Power plants, for instance, discharge warm cooling water into rivers, raising the temperature and affecting the survival of fish and other organisms. Climate change can also contribute to thermal pollution by causing global temperatures to rise, leading to changes in water temperature regimes.

Radioactive Substances

Nuclear accidents and waste disposal can introduce radioactive substances into water bodies, posing a risk to human and environmental health. While some countries have developed measures to manage nuclear waste, the issue remains a concern due to the potential for leakage and long-term ecological consequences.
