The Writing Process

The writing process is a series of actions taken by writers to move from an assignment or idea to a polished product.
The five commonly identified writing process steps are Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing, and Publishing.

Prewriting: The First Step

Prewriting is the first step in the writing process, including any work a writer does before producing a formatted document.
Prewriting activities include:
- Topic selection: Choosing a topic and considering the audience and goal of the writing.
- Research: Gathering information from various sources.
- Brainstorming: Gathering ideas through techniques like freewriting, graphic organizers, lists, and pictures.
- Thesis development: Creating a concise statement of the central idea or argument of the text.
- Organization: Organizing ideas and information into a logical format, often using an outline or other visual tool.

Drafting: The Second Step

Drafting is the next phase of the writing process, where the prewriting ideas, goals, and information are written in the paper's intended format.
A first draft should follow the outline or other organizational plan developed during prewriting and should include the major components of the paper.
Mechanics should not be the focus of the first draft, and the first draft does not need to be good.

Revising: The Third Step

Revising is the third step in the writing process, where the content of the text is examined.
Questions to consider during revising include:
- Does the content of the paper support the thesis?
- Does each paragraph have a relevant topic sentence?
- Do the details support the thesis and topic sentences?
- Are any of the details irrelevant?
- Is the tone of the paper consistent and appropriate?
- Is the organization of the paper logical?

Editing: The Fourth Step

Editing is the fourth step of the writing process, focusing on the details and mechanics of the paper.
Writers should check for:
- Spelling
- Grammar
- Subject/verb agreement
- Sentence structure
- Punctuation
- Redundancy
- Ambiguity
- Consistency

Publishing: The Fifth Step

Publishing is the final step in the writing process, where the text is prepared for the intended audience.
Publication may include:
- Creating a title page
- Adding page numbers
- Creating a header
- Adjusting font, spacing, and other formatting details
- Adding illustrations or other visual elements
