Types of Lines

Geometric Lines
- Mathematically determined, rarely found in nature, often found in man-made constructions, regular, hard or sharp edges, convey order, conformity, and reliability.
Directions of Lines
- Horizontal lines: suggest landscape, horizon, peacefulness, vastness, stability, and constancy, associated with earth-bound things, feeling of rest or repose.
- Vertical lines: perpendicular to the horizon, stretch from earth to heavens, communicate solidity, loftiness, and spirituality, impart height, grandeur, and formality.
- Horizontal and vertical lines combined: structurally stable, convey stability, solidity, and permanence, suggest reliability and safety.
Diagonal Lines
- Suggest depth, illusion of perspective, pull viewer into the painting, appear unbalanced, rising or falling, convey action, movement, or direction, restless and uncontrolled energy.

Curved Lines
